This is my ankle. Seemingly every sip of liquid I take is going directly here, it’s huge. Yesterday while trying to enjoy an end of day mountain bike ride I got stung by a yellow jacket. He got me good, this is huge.
The sting is only the latest in a week of misadventures. Let’s start at the beginning. Saturday, George and I are riding together out on Perry Hill. While trying to ride up some dumb rock, I spin out and can’t unclip fast enough to avoid the slam onto the rock. It smarts. Bad. As in sit there sniveling and sniffing. But really I’m just sad about the huge red welt on my leg from the top tube and the inevitable bruising that will follow.
I call the ride, head back into town and enjoy an evening without having to take care of the kiddo. In the middle of the night I wake up with a neck in agony. Guess I hit my head too. Turns out I must have hit it hard. The neck is awful and my shoulder hurts bad as well. I take Sunday off the bike and do a couple of short rest/recovery rides on the road bike. They’re not much fun and I’m dosing ibuprofen regularly to make my life tolerable.
Wednesday, my body starts to feel better and I start the day with no drugs. But start feeling like crap. My mouth erupts in sores. Turns out I have Coxsackie Virus. My mouth and throat felt (and still feels) like I had been chewing on glass. Couldn’t eat anything. Drinking is unpleasant. Talking becomes painful. Thursday dawns worse than before and it’s my birthday.
In a desperate attempt to not let the whole week get me down, I go out riding yesterday after work. Have eaten almost nothing all day, hardly drank anything but still it felt good to get out on the trail and blow off some steam, celebrating my birthday etc. And then i get stung by the bee. Sigh.
Had an appointment with my sports chiro guy this morning, who helped with the whole neck/shoulder thing, made sure that I didn’t have any serious head trauma, reminded me to get a new helmet, iced my sting and generally coddled me in a very comforting way. I am convinced that the three nasty things have come and gone now and this week can only get better.
5 days until we leave for CO and SSWC09.

All I can say is, ‘there, there, you poor dear.’ Everyone knows trouble comes in 3’s, so you are through it now. Good luck in Colorado. Stay focused and ride throught it, you have the right stuff!
[...] at one point there was a horrid, stinging pain in my eyelid. Like I had just gotten stung by a bee. Remember the last time I got stung by a bee? Was not looking forward to that on my face, but after a few minutes the crazy pain subsided and we [...]
