we finally got several days of warmish, sunny weather and i was lucky to get out several times. a two hour dirt/paved cross bike ride on Friday was invigorating – but not quite warm enough. my feet and hands froze and made the final 30 minutes pretty unbearable.

On Saturday I zipped out for an hour, up to Stowe and back. This is my commuting route and I haven’t ridden it since last fall when i was in the midst of my heart problems. Though I wasn’t breaking any speed records, I climbed the hills far easier and with a much lower heart rate than i did in the fall. It made a huge difference and really made me appreciate how far I’ve come.

Today was the nicest day yet. Very little wind, nice warm sun. I was feeling it. Loads of energy and just eager to get out and ride. First I headed up towards Stowe and then back to the shop where I met up with George and Nat. Nice to ride with someone else for a change, as most of my rides this winter have been solo. Still, I was slow and dragged behind those guys who weren’t even going that fast.

Sometimes I feel that I’ve been working at this riding thing so hard – and yet there’s seemingly little to show for it. How am I still this slow? Why can’t I go farther and faster with each pedal stroke? I’m looking hard to find those little signs of improvement to keep at this, because it’s a huge investment of time and energy and I really want to see it payoff. The signs are there. The weight loss. A much greater stamina. More confidence. But I want to see more. I wish I could see ahead to the end of the summer and where I’ll be then, it’s just such a long road to get there.
