After much hemming and hawing, intimidation and indecision, i finally decided to just suck it up and sign up for the Green Mountain Cyclocross race on Sunday. I’ve wanted to give cyclocross a try for the past couple of years, but we don’t have that many races nearby (makes no sense to drive three hours for 30 minutes of racing) and the ones that we do have are ill-timed with my fall travel schedule. This year though, there were no excuses.
Emily had to give me a bit of a pep talk, just looking at the list of women in the easiest category makes me feel slow. And talking with our friend Matt, I’m afraid this race is a big deal and is not an appropriate entre into the sport. But i’ll give it a whirl. Maybe it’ll be like the Stowe Derby and I’ll never need to do it again.
I wanted to feel a little prepared, so yesterday I took out the cross bike for a short spin out in Stowe. I rode over to the Stump Dump in Moscow and spun around through that trail in the field. Then pulled a log into the lot to practice getting off and on the bike with grace. It’s not pretty, but I prefer having a little bit of practice under my belt.
I made it back to my office just before the raindrops began to fall. A cold, soaking rain fell all night. Things are supposed to improve for Saturday with some rain on Sunday morning. So we’ll see how this thing goes.

the worse the weather, the better you’ll do. Most of these people are roadies. Nothing to fear.
